The Lucas – 140 Shawmut Avenue

The Lucas is a distinctive boutique condominium building in Boston’s South End, created through the restoration and adaptive reuse of the historic German Trinity Catholic Church, originally built in 1874. Finegold Alexander Architects preserved the church’s Gothic stone façade, bell tower and architectural character while introducing a contemporary eight-story steel-and-glass residential structure within the original masonry walls.

Completed in 2017, The Lucas contains just 33 luxury residences ranging from one to four bedrooms. The individually designed homes feature a combination of dramatic historic details and modern finishes, including high ceilings, oversized windows, open living spaces, designer kitchens, gas fireplaces and private outdoor space in select residences. Some homes incorporate original stained glass, vaulted ceilings or elements of the former bell tower.
