LEATHER DISTRICT

Named for the manufacturers that churned out shoes, belts, strops and other leather goods in its handsome brick factory-warehouse buildings, the Leather District is now a collection of condominiums that take advantage of the vast floor areas, high ceilings, oversized windows and fireproof construction of its 19th-century commercial architecture to offer the loftiest in luxury living. Largely built between the 1880s and 1920 after the Great Boston Fire of 1872, the buildings sport distinctive architectural features such as Romanesque arches, corbelled cornices and classical details, giving their residents a pride of place. The district is just as well located as it is well appointed, with Chinatown and Tufts Medical Center to the west, Downtown and the Financial District to the north, the Waterfront and Seaport to the east, and major highways to the south. That means all the shopping, dining and nightlife you’ve ever dreamed of are just steps away, not to mention major transit routes: the Orange Line at Chinatown and the Red and Silver lines, Commuter Rail, Amtrak and bus service at South Station.
